A recent impeachment trial has unveiled a substantial joint bank account between former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte, showing a total of P96 million situated at the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Julia Vargas branch in Pasig City. BPI official Marwin Galvez provided this information during the trial, confirming that the account comprises various time deposits, manager’s checks, and insurance-related transactions.
Testifying on the 35th day of the trial, Galvez detailed that the account began with a P40.65 million time deposit initiated in January 2010, which was later supplemented by an additional P55 million. This brings the account total to P96 million, with the initial deposit experiencing a renewal growth to P41.72 million before funds were used to issue manager’s checks.
The prosecution further disclosed that over P16.85 million from this account was allocated towards purchasing insurance products, particularly a policy involving businessman Samuel “Sammy” Uy. Prosecutor James Bryan Ibrahim Alih emphasized the importance of tracing the flow of the manager’s checks, as these transactions might not be reflected in the account's year-end balances.
Additionally, the prosecution has pointed out that Duterte and her husband, Attorney Manases Carpio, hold a total of 30 active accounts across eight banks. These accounts reportedly have combined year-end balances estimated at P190 million for the years 2022 to 2025, which have allegedly not been declared in Vice President Sara Duterte's Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN).
