The Department of Justice (DOJ) clarified that Leandro Leviste, the Representative for Batangas 1st District, should not be considered a "fugitive from justice" at this time. This statement contradicts earlier remarks from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
During a press briefing on October 8, DOJ Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Herbert Calvin Abugan stated, "As of now, not yet. There's a process that needs to be followed before we can declare him a fugitive from justice." He emphasized that the court will provide Leviste the opportunity to appear for the scheduled hearing.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag had previously announced that Leviste was being treated as a fugitive following an arrest warrant issued by the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 235. Matibag noted, "Considered na you're a fugitive from justice kasi hinahanap ka ng korte; may warrant of arrest na binigay sa'yo" (You are considered a fugitive from justice because the court is looking for you; an arrest warrant has been issued against you).
Leviste and his mother, Senator Loren Legarda, are currently in France, where Legarda is on medical leave due to lung issues, according to attorney Tony La Viña.
