BOOK REVIEW: Kangleon by Gerry de Cadiz

Kangleon is a historical novel that brings the story of Colonel Ruperto Kangleon and the Filipino resistance in Leyte into the larger narrative of the Second World War. Combining documented history with fictionalized dialogue, espionage, romance, and wartime intrigue, the novel shifts attention from famous generals and massive armies toward the Filipinos who continued resisting long before Allied troops returned to Leyte in October 1944.

This perspective makes Kangleon particularly relevant to the annual Leyte Landings Commemoration. The landings are often remembered through the iconic return of General Douglas MacArthur and the arrival of American and Allied forces on October 20, 1944. Kangleon, however, reminds readers that liberation had a crucial local dimension. Guerrillas gathered intelligence, maintained communications, watched Japanese movements, assisted civilians, and prepared communities for the Allied return. Kangleon’s story therefore broadens the meaning of commemoration: Leyte was not merely the place where liberation forces landed; it was also a landscape where Filipinos had already been resisting occupation. One of the novel’s strengths is its portrayal of resistance as complicated rather than effortless. The guerrillas faced not only Japanese forces but also shortages, broken communications, competing commands, suspicion, collaboration, and internal rivalries. Kangleon’s greatest challenge consequently became more than defeating an occupying army. He had to create unity and purpose among fragmented resistance forces. This theme gives the novel significance beyond military history.

The book also humanizes war through civilians, couriers, nurses, radio operators, families, and ordinary villagers. Its fictional elements—including hidden documents, intelligence networks, betrayal, romance, and the mystery of wartime treasure—provide a cinematic framework for exploring the human cost of occupation. Yet its deeper “treasure” is memory: the sacrifices of people whose names rarely appear in conventional histories.

For Philippine history, Kangleon encourages readers to understand liberation as both an international military campaign and a Filipino struggle for survival, dignity, and national freedom. Kangleon’s postwar service—as military governor, Secretary of National Defense, and senator—also extends the novel’s central question beyond 1945: what responsibilities does a wartime leader carry into peace? That question gives Kangleon contemporary relevance. Modern societies still confront disinformation, institutional rivalry, political division, threats to sovereignty, and the challenge of preserving historical memory. The novel suggests that military strength alone cannot sustain a nation. Leadership requires integrity, organization, sacrifice, and the ability to unite people around a common purpose. For the Leyte Landings Commemoration, Kangleon thus offers more than remembrance. It invites succeeding generations to look beyond monuments and ceremonies and rediscover the Filipinos behind liberation. Its enduring message is captured by the novel’s central idea: the true treasure of Leyte was never the gold beneath its mountains, but the courage of a people who refused to surrender their country.
